Do you provide Engineering design services?

In some case, we can.  It depends on the complexity of your application. Please contact us with details of your requirements.  If you want, we can also sign a non-disclosure agreement.

Can you help us with our piezoceramic applications?

Yes, we can.  Take a look at our piezo tutorial section for application notes.  Please feel free to contact us after you have gone through these notes.

How are the pieces made?

The pieces are pressed into different shapes (rings, discs, plates) from spray dried ceramic powder with the help of Presses.  Upon firing, these pieces shrink 15-120% and .  The pieces are then machined to the required tolerances and silver electrodes are screen printed on them.  A high voltage is then applied to the pieces to polarize them and make them piezoelectric.

What type of in-process inspections do you perform?

The pieces are monitored after pressing, firing, machining and poling to make sure that they meet all the required parameters.

How do you identify the positive side of the piezoceramic product?

We apply a small epoxy dot on the positive face or the side closer to the positive face of the part.

What kind of safety programs do you have?

All employees are trained in the safety issues which is monitored by a safety committee.

Do you have an employee training program?

All employees are given specific training guides for each operation along with cross training.  A permanent record of this training is kept for each employee.

Do you generate hazardous wastes?

Yes.  We have a hazardous waste program in which all ceramic related waste is handled and shipped according to DEP regulations.  We are also monitored by local authorities who report to DEP/EPA on our water discharge.

Can the VAM department manufacture non-ceramic type assemblies?

Although PKI's VAM department is primarily geared towards the construction of piezoelectric ceramic assemblies, we are well equipped and staffed to do non-ceramic electronic and mechanical assemblies.

Can the VAM department  assist the customer in the design of assemblies?

Yes, in addition to ceramic experts, PKI's staff includes personnel skilled in electronic and mechanical engineering who can assist in the design of assemblies.

In addition to one time deliveries, can shipments be spread out over a period of months or years?

Yes, the VAM department can set up a manufacturing/shipping schedule to suit the needs of the customer.

Can the VAM department develop prototypes for customers evaluation prior to manufacturing release?

Yes, we will work closely with our customers to develop the assembly to their satisfaction.

What parameters are routinely tested on piezoelectric ceramics?

The following parameters are tested on almost all products:

  1. Physical dimensions
  2. Capacitance and Loss Factor
  3. Resonant Frequency and Coupling
  4. Piezoelectric d33 coefficient

How are capacitance and loss factor tested?

They are tested on a capacitance test meter (LCR bridge) at a standard frequency of 1 KHz and 1 volt.

What is resonant frequency and how is it tested?

Resonant frequency is defined as the frequency of minimum impedance.  Resonant frequency (minimum impedance) and Anti-resonant frequency (maximum impedance) are tested using the latest Hewlett Packard Impedance Analyzers and computer interfaced testing software.

How is the piezolectric coefficient tested?

d33 is tested on a piezoelectric test meter especially designed for this test.   This meter will also display the polarity orientation of the part during the test so that the proper polarity marking can be verified.

Can I purchase a d33 and polarity tester from Piezo Kinetics?

Yes, we act as a distributor for the Z-J2 piezoelectric test meter. Contact us for more details.

Are all parts 100% tested?

Yes, every part is 100% tested on the parameter that is most critical to that part.   This is usually determined by the customer's specifications.  Many times, more than one parameter will be 100% tested but we will always 100% test at least one parameter.
Example-1: If the customer specifies a frequency of 1 MHz ± 2% then we would 100% test this frequency.
Example-2: If the customer specifies a capacitance of 3000 pF ± 5%, the we would 100% test this capacitance.

May I purchase special test groupings?

Yes, frequency, capacitance and d33 may be purchased as groups, matched pairs etc.   Please contact us for additional requirements.

Is recorded data available?

Yes, a customer may specify parts to be serialized and specific data to be recorded and shipped with the parts.

What type of tolerances can I purchase for frequency, capacitance and d33?

Standard frequency tolerances are ±5% but tighter tolerances are available on request.

Standard capacitance tolerances are ±10% but tighter tolerances are available on request.

Standard d33 readings are minimums as published in the catalog but ranges are available on request.

What type of tolerances can I purchase for physical dimensions such as OD, ID, length, width and thickness?

See table for as fired Vs machined tolerances.  The table will be put up shortly.

Has Piezo Kinetics taken steps to become Year 2000 compliant?

Piezo Kinetics began analysis of the company's Year 2000 compliance in 1998, and will continue to monitor Y2K issues throughout the Millennium transition.

Based on preliminary review of our products, Systems and facilities, we feel confident that Piezo Kinetics can continue to provide high quality products and customer service. without interruption due to internal Year 2000-related problems.

No product sold by Piezo Kinetics is subject to Y2K-related problems.

To the best of our knowledge and belief, all of PKI's production equipment, facilities systems, computer hardware and software, accounting systems, and sales/customer service systems will perform their essential functions successfully during the Millennium transition.

We have conducted a survey of our critical suppliers, and will continue to monitor supplier progress throughout 1999. Based on initial supplier responses, we feel confident that Piezo Kinetics can continue to provide high quality products and customer service without interruption due to our suppliers' Year 2000-related problems.

We are sure you recognize, however, that certain Year 2000-related problems are beyond the power of a company like ours to control. Such problems could include the following:

  1. interruption of regional electrical power service
  2. failure of national, regional or local telecommunications systems
  3. delivery failures of national carriers such as UPS and USPS
  4. failure of the banking system to process payments by check or wire

Should problems of this sort arise, you could experience an interruption in the high level of customer service Piezo Kinetics is otherwise prepared to provide.

Except for the broad-based problems discussed above, however, Piezo Kinetics believes it is prepared to provide uninterrupted service to its customers throughout the Millennium transition.
